EDISON SQUARE VETERANS HOUSING
PHILADELPHIA, PA

UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This project involves the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of Edison High School’s stunning Beaux-Arts style 1933 north wing, which will be transformed into 66 supportive housing units for veterans. This conversion has historical significance due to Edison’s tragic past of losing more of its alumni in the Vietnam War than any other high school in the nation. This renovation project will breathe new life into the long vacant building and its surrounding community, while also paying homage to those individuals lost while serving their country.

The first floor, dedicated to its residents and surrounding community members, will comprise of support services, gathering areas, and spaces for job training and continuing education. The apartments will be located on the upper levels of the building in an effort to take advantage of the original expansive windows and high ceilings—in order to create airy, light-filled spaces with a contemporary loft aesthetic. Each unit is being developed according to PHFA Minimum Development standards, and the project as a whole is being developed in compliance with Enterprise Green Communities Criteria. The building’s convenient location to public transit, various retail stores, parks, libraries, etc. provides residents easy access to a vibrant community and an array of resources.
